Nelson Hockey was awarded a $2000 grant at the end of 2018 from the Hockey Foundation towards coaching clinics. This grant was given out in line with the Hockey Foundations Vision “Coaching is our Game” which is to grow quality coaching to assist in strong player development.
Nelson Hockey used the $2000 grant towards their development program which allowed them to run a 6-week program between June 3rdand July 8th. These programs catered to around 70 kids who were able to get out on the turf for 2 hours a week. The program was facilitated by 6 coaches from around the Nelson Hockey region.
The program was seen as a success as it was the first time that Nelson Hockey was able to run an academy program which was the first steps in setting up and building future academy and quality coaching sessions in the Nelson Region.
The programs are designed to improve the level of performance at both the Under 13 and Under 15 level in Nelson Hockey both at a playing level but also as a coaching development opportunity as well. The academy set up is going to filter onto further holiday programs which is going to provide further opportunities for development.
Nelson Hockey Operations Manager Fabian Amor stated, “It was really good for Nelson Hockey as it allowed us to have a lot more kids involved than last year which meant that we were able to develop hockey in the region further”.
